Royal Mail has revealed alarming statistics highlighting the risks faced by postal workers due to dog attacks. In the 12 months leading up to 31 March 2024, a total of 2,206 dog attacks were reported, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year. This equates to an average of 42 attacks per week across the UK, with several incidents resulting in life-altering injuries.

One of the most troubling findings in the report is the dramatic rise in attacks causing serious and significant injuries. There has been a 148% increase in such incidents, with 82 attacks causing severe harm compared to 33 in the previous year. These figures underscore the urgent need for improved measures to protect postal workers from potentially dangerous dogs.

The report also identified the highest-risk locations for dog attacks. Portsmouth (PO) and Belfast (BT) postcode areas topped the list, with 62 incidents reported in each location. These were closely followed by Bristol (BS) and Brighton (BN) areas, each reporting 48 attacks. Plymouth (PL) ranked third with 44 incidents.

The rising number of dog attacks on postal workers highlights the need for heightened awareness and preventative measures among dog owners. Educating the public about responsible dog ownership and ensuring proper containment of pets during deliveries are critical steps in reducing these alarming figures.
