A recent press release from South Yorkshire Police highlights the alarming consequences of irresponsible dog ownership, with Chief Inspector Emma Cheney stating, “Something has to change; owners have to change; we cannot continue to see the consequences that irresponsible dog ownership is causing to our communities.”

During 2024, the force conducted 1,797 investigations into dogs causing injury or fear. Tragically, 1,049 people suffered injuries, some so severe that they required surgery and have been left with permanent physical and mental scars.

Of even greater concern is the impact on children. Out of these incidents, 347 involved children under 15 years old, with 73 of the victims being under the age of three. Research shows that children are most often bitten by familiar dogs within the home, as they may not recognise or understand a dog’s behaviour or warning signs.

Chief Inspector Cheney, who leads the force’s work on dangerous dogs, urged owners to take proactive steps to prevent incidents:

“Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them, that their dog wouldn’t hurt anyone, but any dog, of any breed, has the ability to cause harm. Teaching children how to interact with dogs, respecting boundaries, and being responsible while out walking all make a difference.”

The police also reminded dog owners of key safety measures, including:

  • Never leaving children and dogs unattended.
  • Ensuring dogs have a safe space to retreat to, especially when visitors are present.
  • Adapting homes as children grow and become more mobile, such as using stair gates to keep dogs and children separate.
  • Keeping dogs on leads in public spaces, staying alert to other dogs, and ensuring dogs are microchipped and wearing collars.

Despite these efforts, the growing demand on police resources to address dog-related incidents is placing significant strain on public services, with the financial burden ultimately falling on taxpayers. Chief Inspector Cheney emphasised the need for shared responsibility:

“We are committed to educating dog owners and doing all we can to help them reduce the risk posed by their pets. However, we need everyone to do their part.”
