Despite the introduction of the XL bully ban in early 2024, the number of dog attacks recorded in England and Wales has continued to rise. Official figures show that there were more than 31,000 reported attacks in 2024, an increase on the previous year. The true number is likely to be even higher, as some police forces were unable to provide full data.

This upward trend is something we see reflected in our own casework at Slee Blackwell Solicitors. As specialists in dog bite injury claims, we are regularly contacted by people who have suffered serious physical and psychological harm as a result of dog attacks.

Upward trend fuelled by irresponsible dog ownership

Earlier this year, the news carried reports about a man from Birmingham who was helping a friend search for her lost keys at the end of a camping trip. Her dog was inside the car at the time but unexpectedly leapt out of the window and bit him. Michael was treated in hospital and says he was fortunate that the owner managed to regain control, as the attack could easily have been fatal.

Michael did not pursue a legal claim but shared his experience out of concern for growing levels of irresponsible dog ownership. Unfortunately, his story is not unusual. Many of the people who contact us describe similar experiences involving dogs that were not properly trained, secured, or supervised by their owners.

The unpredictable nature of dog attacks

Dog attacks are often unpredictable. Even dogs who have never shown any signs of aggression can behave unpredictably and cause serious injury. This is one of the reasons dog bite cases are so legally complex.

Owners of dogs who have attacked frequently say in their defence that their dog had never given them any reason to expect that they might bite. But this is of limited relevance when it comes to deciding legal liability, and we regularly succeed in recovering compensation even when the dog involved in the attack has never previously exhibited signs of aggression.
