When something as shocking and unexpected as a dog bite happens it’s only natural to be concerned about how the bite will heal and if you will be left with a permanent scar. It’s going to be especially worrying if the bite is on the face or if a child has been injured. The appearance of some scars can be improved with surgery but this is not always possible. An alternative which works for women, children and men is skin camouflage.

What is skin camouflage?

Skin camouflage (sometimes called cosmetic camouflage) describes the application to the skin of specially formulated cosmetic products designed to help conceal scars, birthmarks and skin conditions whilst blending with the surrounding skin tone. The products are also used following cosmetic surgery procedures to help conceal redness and for covering unwanted tattoos.

Camouflage products are highly pigmented, providing far better coverage than ordinary cosmetics. Once correctly applied they are waterproof and smudge-resistant so that swimming and sports activities are possible and can last all day without needing to be retouched. Camouflage products do not treat the underlying scar but help to conceal it and improve appearance at normal conversational distance.

It is possible to buy camouflage cosmetics online but it is always advisable to have a consultation with someone who is trained in selecting and applying the products. A lot of time and money can be wasted in buying products online that do not match your individual skin tone or which you struggle to apply.

What happens during a consultation?

A skin camouflage consultation takes about an hour, during which time the practitioner assesses the scar to be concealed and tests camouflage creams directly onto the skin to find the best skin tone match and brand. A thin layer of the camouflage cream is applied to the scar and sealed with a loose finishing powder and/or fixing spray. The immediate improvement to the appearance of the skin can sometimes be quite overwhelming. You will then try the application technique yourself to ensure that you are able to apply the products correctly and that it is compatible with your lifestyle. Advice is given on skin preparation, removing the product, sun protection, how to ensure that the product will stay put and any questions that you have can also be answered. You will also be told how to obtain get the products for yourself.

Your skin camouflage products can be included as part of your compensation claim for your dog bite injury. We will be able to advise you about this and connect you with expert makeup artists such as Rowena Wilson.
